2013 Edition : A great success!
More than 750 students, across all Belgian universities, participated in the 2013 BCG Strategy Cup. 20 teams were selected for the semi-finals and 4 teams participated in the finals (Apertum (UA), Suzukot 2.0 (ULB-Solvay), The Broos Brothers (UGent), Insight (UCL).
The case
The students were asked to review the growth strategy for a global mining company. The mining company had mines in different fields; i.e. iron, bauxite, nickel and copper, but now wanted to expand into new commodities through growth by M&A (merger and acquisition).
The mining company had identified 3 potential target companies, in diamond and/or coal mining. Students were asked to value each target company and to recommend which of the three would be the best fit for the client company. On the last day, the students were also asked to place a bid on the target company of their choice.
